Most people in North America have seen and heard the steelpan, or steeldrum as its known, on vacation commercials and have largely associated the sound of this musical instrument with Caribbean leisure, sunshine and good times. Invented in Trinidad and Tobago and made from 55-gallon steel drums, the steelpan has quietly developed a worldwide cadre of practitioners and devotees.
